GI physician leader to know: Dr. Donald Castell of Medical University of South Carolina

Donald Castell, MD, is the director of the Esophageal Disorders Program and a professor of medicine in the gastroenterology and hepatology division of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He is a past president of the American Gastroenterological Association. He is board-certified in internal medicine and internal medicine: gastroenterology.

Dr. Castell's clinical interests include esophageal and swallowing disorders as well as motility. He has authored or co-authored more than 500 publications on esophageal diseases and function. He is also the editor and principal contributor of "The Esophagus," a primary text on this subject, which is currently in its fourth edition.

Additionally, Dr. Castell has served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1979 and retired with the rank of captain. He has also previously served as the Kimbel Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia.

Dr. Castell earned his medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed his residency at Bethesda (Md.) Naval Hospital as well as a fellowship at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
