GI leader to know: Dr. Thomas Ma of Penn State College

Thomas Ma, MD, is a gastroenterologist who will join State College, Pa.-based Penn State College of Medicine, to serve as chair of the department of medicine, effective Jan. 1, 2018.

Dr. Ma currently serves as chief of gastroenterology and hepatology at Albuquerque-based University of New Mexico.

He is internationally known for his research on defective intestinal barriers and how they cause inflammatory bowel diseases.

Dr. Ma is the editor-in-chief of the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology.

He earned his medical degree and PhD at Richmond-based Virginia Commonwealth University.
