GI leader to know: Dr. Juanita Merchant of the University of Arizona

Juanita Merchant, MD, PhD, is the chief of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at the Tucson-based University of Arizona.

In addition to her role as chief of the division of gastroenterology, Dr. Merchant is a professor of medicine at the University of Arizona department of medicine.

She is also a member of the cancer biology research program at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Dr. Merchant was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, an arm of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in 2008.

In 2016, she joined the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease.
