IU receives $3.1M NCI grant for computer-simulated CRC treatment research: 3 details

Paul Macklin, PhD, an associate professor at the Indianapolis-based Indiana University School of Informatics and member of the Indiana University Cancer Center, received a $3.1 million grant to fund research for new colorectal cancer treatments through computer simulations. About one-third of the award will support activities in Dr. Macklin's lab at Indiana University.

Here are the key details to know:

1. Dr. Macklin's PhysiCell software simulates cellular activity, allowing researchers to study how complex cellular interactions fuel the spread and growth of tumors in the body.

2. The other researchers working on the project include Stacey Finley, PhD, who studies cellular metabolism in a single cell, and Shannon Mumenthaler, PhD, who specializes in creating cell cultures that mimic bodily organs. Both researchers are from the University of Southern California.

3. The first phase of the research will focus on adapting a mathematical model of Dr. Finley's metabolic pathway research into the PhysiCell system.
