The grant, from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, will fund an investigation into the link between intestinal bacteria and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
The principal investigators of the grant are Dr. Salzman and Ingrid B. Borecki, PhD, associate professor of biostatistics and genetics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
The goal of this study is to “investigate the composition of the intestinal microbiome in obese pediatric patients with and without NAFLD, to determine whether there are differences in their intestinal bacteria that could relate to the development of fatty liver and liver inflammation in children,” according to the release.
