Gastroenterologist to know: Dr. Barry Wershil of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago

Barry K. Wershil, MD, is a pediatric gastroenterologist and director of the department of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Dr. Wershil’s clinical and research interests include eosinophilic esophagitis, allergies, conditions of the digestive system, immunology and inflammation. In addition to the Wershil Laboratory, his own research laboratory focused on the mechanisms involved in allergic and neurogenic inflammation, Dr. Wershil also works in the Clinical & Translation Research Program and Center for Intestinal & Liver Inflammation Research.

Dr. Wershil is a member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, American Association of Immunologists, American Gastroenterological Association and Society for Pediatric Research. He earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and completed his residency at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Dr. Wershil completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at Boston Children’s Hospital.
