The research team is being led by Polly Newcomb, PhD, the head of the center’s cancer prevention program.
“About 20 to 30 percent of all colorectal cancers have this subtype,” said Dr. Newcomb, a longtime public health researcher. “It’s more difficult to find and there’s evidence that these are particularly aggressive cancers. Patients are more likely to have a poorer outcome.”
Dr. Newcomb will work with Fred Hutchinson researchers including gastroenterologist William Grady, MD; epidemiologist Amanda Phipps, PhD and biostatistician Chad He, PhD.
