In recent study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, researchers examined the effect of bowel cleanse quality on adherence to the recommendation. The researchers examined quality of colon cleansing among 1,387 follow-up colonoscopy patients.
• 15.3 percent of subjects had excellent/good bowel preparation quality
• 75 percent of subjects had fair bowel preparation quality
• 31.6 percent of subjects had poor bowel preparation quality
The researchers concluded that recommendations inconsistent with guidelines for 10-year intervals following initial colonoscopy screening occurred in less than 20 percent of patients. They suggest that minimizing the occurrence of fair bowel preparation may improve proper recommendation adherence.
