Study: P53, PUMA Independently Regulate IEC Apoptosis in Colitis

The tumor suppressor p53 and p53-upregulated modulator of apoptosis independently regulate intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis in colitis, according to a study in Gastroenterology.

Increased intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis is a hallmark of inflammatory bowel disease. Mutations in p53 appear early in the progression to colitis-induced cancer. The study explored the role of p53 and its target PUMA to mediate inflammation-induced IEC apoptosis.

 

The study found that inflammation-induced IEC apoptosis utilizes p53 mechanisms that are dependent and independent of PUMA and intrinsic apoptosis pathway activation, meaning that both p53 and PUMA regulate IEC apoptosis in colitis.
