Endomicroscopy Capsule Offers Minimally Invasive Barrett’s Esophagus Screening

Researchers have developed a pill-sized, optomechanical endomicroscopy capsule that once swallowed by a patient provides microstructural, three-dimensional images of the upper GI tract, according to a Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News report.

The capsule uses optical frequency domain-imaging technology to provide images, which researchers found to be high quality at a rate of 94.5 percent.

The device can be reused after being disinfected and shows promise as a minimally invasive screening technique for Barrett’s Esophagus.
