Edible batteries could soon power digestible cameras — 3 things to know

Researchers at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University are developing edible batteries using natural chemicals that could soon power rechargeable, swallowable cameras, Gastroenterology and Endoscopy News reports.

Here’s what you need to know.

1. The batteries are made of pigment and are powered by natural chemicals. Melanin and other molecules are used to produce voltage.

2. The researchers first presented their findings at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia.

3. The researchers have already developed a biodegradable “smart pill” to decrease toxicity associated with swallowing medical devices. It’s designed to avoid getting stuck in a patient’s GI tract.
