Dr. Ashish Nimgaonkar wins AGA-Boston Scientific award

Ashish Nimgaonkar, MBBS, MTech, MS, of John Hopkins University in Baltimore, has received the American Gastroenterological Association Research Foundation's AGA-Boston Scientific Career Development Technology & Innovation Award, according to a News Medical report.

"Dr. Nimgaonkar's research represents a potential breakthrough in the treatment of patients with chronic liver disease," said Martin Brotman, MD, AGAF, chair, AGA Research Foundation. "The AGA Research Foundation is proud to support Dr. Nimgaonkar as he works to enhance this technology and bring it one step closer to clinical practice."

Dr. Nimgaonkar's research focuses on refractory ascites, of which liver transplantation is the only current, definitive treatment. Dr. Nimgaonkar developed wireless shunt technology to pull the fluid from the peritoneal space into the stomach. With help of this technology, patients are able to manage a large part of their condition at home.

The award is supported by a grant from Boston Scientific.
