The study, published in the journal Gastroenterology, found that patients with short-term SSRI exposure had a greater risk of GI bleeding. The only SSRIs linked to GI bleeding risk were fluoxetine and sertraline.
The risk was not found in patients taking drugs in other antidepressant classes such as tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors.
The risk of bleeding increased when SSRIs were combined with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
