AGA honors Dr. Robert Sandler with 2015 Julius Friedenwald Medal — 5 key notes

The American Gastroenterological Association honored Robert S. Sandler, MD, MPH, with the 2015 Julius Friedenwald Medal.

AGA honored Dr. Sandler for his lifelong contributions to the field of gastroenterology during Digestive Disease Week 2015 in Washington, D.C. Here are five things to know about Dr. Sandler:

1. Dr. Sandler directed the University of North Carolina’s multidisciplinary NIDDK-funded Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease. He also headed the North Carolina Colorectal Cancer Care Outcomes, Research and Surveillance Study.

2. During his career, Dr. Sandler developed a national clinical trials data management resource and led the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at UNC.

3. Dr. Sandler is a leader in GI epidemiology. He established the first NIH-funded training program in GI epidemiology.

4. Throughout his career, Dr. Sandler published 345 papers in the peer-reviewed literature.

5. Dr. Sandler served as president of AGA and two terms on the AGA Governing Board. He is the chair of the AGA Publications Committee.
