AGA applauds Senate's $2 billion NIH funding increase — 5 insights

The American Gastroenterological Association commended the U.S. Senate's passage of the 2019 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill, which increased the National Institutes of Health's funding by $2 billion.

Here's what you should know:

1. The bill still needs to pass the U.S. House. If passed, it will increase NIH's funding by 5.5 percent. This would be the largest increase in funding since the doubling period of fiscal year 1999 to fiscal year 2003.

2. The funding would allow NIH to support 1,149 additional research grants.

3. The increase was included in the bill to keep pace with medical research inflation.

4. Initial discussions in the U.S. House involved cutting the $2 billion increase to $1.1 billion. AGA will continue to stump for the $2 billion increase.

5. The AGA recommends its members call the legislature to express their support for the Senate's bill.
