9 Recent Gastroenterologist Appointments

Here are nine recent gastroenterologist appointments.

Richard Larry Williams, MD, has joined the East Wood Clinic in Paris, Tenn. Dr. Williams attended medical school at the University of Memphis College of Medicine.

Hannibal Regional Medical Group in Missouri has announced the addition of Glenn Gordon, MD, to its surgical team. Dr. Gordon will see patients at the Hannibal Regional Medical Building and at his office in Mexico, Mo. He is presently the medical director and a practicing gastroenterologist at the Center for Digestive and Liver Diseases in Mexico, Mo.

Loren Laine, MD, of the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., has begun his presidency of the American Gastroenterological Association Institute. Until 2011, Dr. Laine served as associate chair in the department of medicine of the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles and chief of staff of the Los Angeles County + USC Healthcare Network. Last year, he moved to a new position as professor of medicine and director of clinical research at the Yale University School of Medicine.

The American Gastroenterological Association Research Foundation has announced its 2012 research scholars: three gastroenterologists who each receive $60,000 for two years to help support medical research. Kara Gross Margolis, MD, of Columbia University in New York City, will study the role of enteric neuronal density in intestinal inflammation. Robert E. Schwartz, MD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, will study induced pluripotent stem cells. Shehzad Z. Sheikh, MD, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will study epigenetic regulation of cytokines in inflammatory bowel disease.

Ira Schmelkin, MD, has joined the gastroenterology practice of Heidi Kolek, MD, at Noble Hospital in Westfield, Mass. Dr. Schmelkin specializes in gastroenterological endoscopy, capsule endoscopy and liver disease, and has extensive experience in diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy and endoscopy. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and is fellowship-trained in gastroenterology from Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

Houssam E. Mardini, MD, and Alla Y. Grigorian, MD, have joined Cabell Huntington (W.Va.) Hospital, practicing out of the hospital’s Digestive Disease Center. They have also joined the division of gastroenterology in the department of internal medicine at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in Huntington. Dr. Mardini earned his MD at Damascus (Syria) University, completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh  Medical Center and his fellowship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Dr. Grigorian earned her MD at Yerevan (Armenia) State Medical University and Russian State Medical University in Moscow, and completed her residency and fellowship training at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
