8 things to know about GI and ASCs in 2020

Here are eight things to know about the gastroenterology and surgery center markets.

1. The U.S. GI market was valued at $6.9 billion in 2018 and is expected to have a 5.91 percent compound annual growth rate through 2026, according to a Grand View Research report

2. Freestanding endoscopy centers had most market share in 2018 and likely will stay non-hospital owned.

3. Around 25 percent of all cases in ASCs involve GI or endoscopic procedures, and 27 percent of all single-specialty surgery centers are driven by GI procedures.

4. The average multispecialty ASC has a 35 percent GI case mix, according to the VMG Health Intellimarker report.

5. The average reimbursement per case for GI procedures is $1,027, with the centers at the 90th percentile reporting $1,548 per case on average.

6. The average case mix for GI across the nation is:

• Atlantic region: 37 percent
• Midwest: 18 percent
• Mountain: 25 percent
• Northeast: 36 percent
• Pacific: 39 percent
• South: 31 percent

7. As of 2018, around 72 percent of ASCs were independent and 28 percent were part of multi-site chains, according to the VMG Health Intellimarker.

8. There are 1,027 single-specialty, Medicare-certified GI centers in the U.S., according to MedPAC. Another 160 ASCs are focused on the combination of GI and ophthalmology. About 22 percent of all single-specialty, Medicare-certified ASCs are GI driven.
