5 gastroenterologists in the headlines

Here are five gastroenterologists making recent Becker’s headlines:

1. Gastroenterologist Patrick Okolo, MD, was appointed chief medical officer of Sonoma Valley Hospital in Sonoma, Calif., according to the hospital’s October 2025 board letter. Dr. Okolo previously served as executive medical director and chief of gastroenterology at Rochester Regional Health in New York.

2.Gastroenterologist William Evans III, MD, was the first physician in Kentucky to perform an endoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation for pancreatic cancer. The procedure took place at Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Audubon Hospital.

3. Lee Peng, MD, will lead Neptune, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center’s new gastroenterology program, focused on advanced diagnostic and surgical care for complex digestive diseases. 

4. Peyton Berookim, MD, will lead a new practice established by Beverly Hills Gastroenterology, part of the Gastroenterology Institute of Southern California. 

5. John Glascock, MD, a bariatric surgeon, is suing Waverly (Iowa) Health Center and its CEO, Jodi Geerts, alleging the hospital has put patients at risk.
