Appointments
Harvey Lefton, MD, has been named the 151st president of the Philadelphia County Medical Society. He serves as chief of gastroenterology at Aria Health in Philadelphia and is a faculty member at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.
Ihab Herraka, MD, has joined Sparks Health System’s gastroenterology center, based in Fort Smith, Ark. Dr. Herraka has a special interest in treating inflammatory bowel disease and hepatitis patients.
W. Alan Harmon, MD, has been elected to the American Medical Association’s Council on Medical Service. He practices out of Jacksonville, Fla.
Elizabeth Alonso, MD, has joined Baton Rouge (La.) General Physicians. Dr. Alonso currently serves as associate professor of pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
Paul Martin, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the division of hepatology at the University of Miami, has been elected chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Subspecialty Board on Gastroenterology.
Michael Finnegan, MD, will join St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, N.Y. He specializes in inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis C, esophageal motility and esophageal pH testing.
Joseph Schmer, MD, will join Yakima (Wash.) Gastroenterology Associates. He previously served as director of endoscopy at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y.
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy has announced its 2012-2013 governing board. Thomas Deas, Jr., MD, will serve as president. He currently practices with Gastroenterology Associates of North Texas in Fort Worth and serves as the medical director of the Fort Worth Endoscopy Center and the Southwest Fort Worth Endoscopy Center. Kenneth K. Wang, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., will serve as president-elect. Colleen M. Schmitt, MD, of Galen Medical Group in Chattanooga, Tenn., will serve as president-elect-elect. Kenneth R. McQuaid, MD, of VA Medical Center in San Francisco, will serve as secretary. Douglas O. Faigel, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., will serve as treasurer.
Accomplishments
Partha Nandi, MD, a practicing gastroenterologist in Detroit, is the host of a new health television talk show, Ask Dr. Nandi. The weekly show focuses on a single topic for each episode and will air in both California and Michigan.
Atul Kumar, MD, of Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Hospital, has co-launched a nutritional search engine and database called NutritionRank. The search engine aims to rank food items by using an algorithm that assigns a rating to any individual food ingredient, recipe, packaged item or restaurant dish.
Thomas Sherman, MD, has announced his candidacy for New Hampshire’s House of Representatives. A democrat, Dr. Sherman practices out of Core Physicians in Exeter, N.H. It is his first run at the legislature.
