AMA creates policies to address pay gap between male and female physicians: 6 takeaways

The American Medical Association's House of Delegates adopted new policies to study, advance and advocate for gender equality in medicine. The changes come after multiple studies showed the pay disparity between males and females and after accounting for differences in age, experience and more.

Here are six takeaways:

1. The association called for policies promoting transparency in defining the criteria for physician compensation.

2. They suggested pay structures be based on criteria that are objective and gender-neutral.

3. Training for staff who determine salary was suggested to identify implicit bias in determining compensation.

4. Getting rid of requiring applicants to disclose prior salary information was included in the new policies.
