Business associates, vendors played a role in nearly 800K record breaches in Q2

Twenty-six healthcare breach incidents reported in the second quarter involved business associates or third-party vendors, according to the Q2 2018 Protenus Breach Barometer

Information is available for 22 of these incidents. Those 22 breaches affected 796,875 patient records, or about 25 percent of all records breached in the quarter.

Here's how business associates and vendors were involved in the incidents:

1. Business associate involved in hacking: 9
2. Insider error: 9
3. Insider wrongdoing: 2
4. Theft: 2
5. Unknown categorization: 1

Note: Additional incidents may have involved third-parties, but Protenus did not have not sufficient information to draw that conclusion.
