Physician-owned hospitals have recently been the target of resistance from major hospital groups as lawmakers push a bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act's restrictions on POHs.

Alexander Padilla has been charged with practicing medicine without a license after allegedly performing a botched breast surgery at a Houston-based plastic surgery center, ABC affiliate KTRK reported Oct. 27.

Nineteen percent of physicians pay between $5,000 and $9,999 for malpractice premiums, according to Medscape's 2023 "Physicians and Malpractice Report," published Oct. 26.

ASCs often struggle to compete for staff against the deep pockets of hospitals in their market, but employees are often drawn to ASCs for the workplace flexibility and positive work culture.
