White House CIO to health CIOs: 'Beware the internet of things'

The White House's Chief Information Officer Tony Scott warned hospital CIOs to be careful about "who and what" they connect with at a recent conference, SearchHealthIT reports.

Here's what you need to know.

1. Mr. Scott warns that interoperability could create unknown vulnerabilities in a network.

He said at the conference, "I can interoperate with you, but should I? Is that thing I'm hooking up to, connecting to safe? Is it reliable? Is it what it represents itself to be? Or is it masquerading as something?"

2. The denial of service attacks from October 2016 are a perfect example of the dangers of interoperability, Mr. Scott said. The attacks happened because devices gained access to an internet service provider through an authorized connection.

3. Mr. Scott said people need to ask questions of their technology systems with cybersecurity in mind.

4. Mr. Scott was the keynote presented at the College of Healthcare Information Management
Executives Fall CIO Forum.
