Surgery Center of Oklahoma spearheads free surgery program for teachers & state workers — 5 takeaways

Oklahoma City-based Surgery Center of Oklahoma launched a program offering free procedures to state workers and teachers, according to KFOR.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The program has since expanded to 50 facilities across Oklahoma.

2. Surgery Center of Oklahoma's Keith Smith, MD, is among the surgeons offering the procedures.

3. Last January, Health Choice, the largest self-funded insurance plan in Oklahoma, launched Health Choice Select network of providers. Under the network, providers agreed to a discounted price for members under a bundled payment initiative. Health Choice Administrator said, "We're taking a very aggressive approach with the bundled pricing trend here in Oklahoma. We believe there is significant enough savings that it could be a real game changer."

4. KLOS reported Health Choice covers nearly every Oklahoma teacher.

5. Through the initiative, Oklahoma County employees have saved $250,000 in out-of-pocket expenses and about $2000 per person per procedure.
