Same day surgeries increase at Naval Hospital Pensacola — 4 insights

After making several facility improvements, Naval Hospital Pensacola (Fla.) has seen a dramatic increase in the number of outpatient surgical cases, Dvids reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. The hospital is in the midst of transitioning to an ambulatory only care model, effective in July.

2. The hospital made the decision because majority of the center's cases were already outpatient. In 2017, NHP performed 3,100 outpatient cases compared to fewer than 1,000 inpatient cases.

3. Hospital administrators expect NHP to perform 3,900 outpatient cases in 2018.

4. NHP Director for Surgical Services Cmdr. Zhengshi Song said, "As medicine has improved, the vast majority of surgical cases performed are outpatient cases. The increase in outpatient cases isn’t just here at Naval Hospital Pensacola, but across the entire medical community. More and more, patients can have a surgery done in the morning and can be home in their bed that same night."
