2. AAMC predicts a shortage of between 42,600 physicians and 121,300 physicians could occur by 2030.

3. Researchers believe there will be shortages in four key areas: primary care, speciality care, surgical specialties and other specialties.

4. Concerning the shortage areas, researchers believe there will be a shortage of between 14,800 and 49,300 for primary care physicians, while the specialty care physician shortage will fall between 33,800 and 72,700.

5. The increased demand for physicians stems from the aging population. The U.S. population is expected to grow 11 percent by 2030, and it's expected the percentage of people aged 65 years and older will increase 50 percent by 2030.
