No surprises here: 3 highest paying physician specialties hold onto top spots in 2018

The three top-earning physician specialties from 2017 are among the highest compensated this year, and the lowest-earning specialties this year are the same as those reported five years ago, according to Medscape's 2018 Physician Compensation Report

The report was based on data from more than 20,000 physicians across 29 specialties.

Here are 29 stats on average annual physician compensation by specialty.

1. Plastic surgery: $501,000
2. Orthopedics: $497,000
3. Cardiology: $423,000
4. Gastroenterology: $408,000
5. Radiology: $401,000
6. Dermatology: $392,000
7. Anesthesiology: $386,000
8. Otolaryngology: $383,000
9. Urology: $373,000
10. Oncology: $363,000
11. Ophthalmology: $357,000
12. Critical care: $354,000
13. Emergency medicine: $350,000
14. General surgery: $322,000
15. Pulmonary medicine: $321,000
16. OB/GYN: $300,000
17. Nephrology: $294,000
18. Pathology: $286,000
19. Psychiatry: $273,000
20. Allergy & immunology: $272,000
21. Physical medicine & rehabilitation: $269,000
22. Rheumatology: $257,000
23. Neurology: $244,000
24. Infectious diseases: $231,000
25. Internal medicine: $230,000
26. Family medicine: $219,000
