81% of physicians say mobile technology has shifted dynamics of physician appointments — 7 insights

Physicians feel digital technology and information tools are allowing them to keep up with the shifting healthcare environment, a Merck Manuals survey found, according to mobihealthnews.

The survey included 220 physician responses.

Here are seven insights:

1. Of the surveyed physicians, 81 percent reported medical information available via mobile devices has transformed the physician office visit.

2. Three-fourths of surveyed physicians reported being tech-savvy, and are depending on mobile technology for patient interaction.

3. Of those physicians who labeled themselves as tech-savvy, two out of three said they used a mobile device to obtain medical information more than 10 times daily at work.

4. Of those who reported using a mobile device at work, 80 percent said they sought information related to diagnoses or treatment plans for patients. Also, two-thirds are reading medical news on their mobile devices.

5. Mobile technology is enhancing the physician-patient relationship, making face-time more efficient and meaningful. More than 50 percent of physicians noted they are more like to go over medical information with their patients.

6. Additionally, 29 percent of physicians noted mobile medical information has enhanced appointment efficiency.

7. The survey noted, however, that some patients are showing up to appointments with misguided information because of online searching.
