10 hospitals have shuttered or announced closures of key service lines in the last 10 months, labor and delivery, NICUs, home health, ASCs and more, leaving physicians and ASC operators to navigate shifting referral patterns and care gaps in their markets.
Here are the 10 hospitals closing services in the last month:
1. Buffalo, N.Y.-based Catholic Health will close its Mercy Diagnostic and Treatment Center in West Seneca when the facility’s lease expires in January 2027. The closure will affect nuclear medicine, radiology and rehabilitation therapy services at the location. Trinity OB-GYN will not be affected.
2. Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare plans to consolidate obstetrical services from three Illinois hospitals into two regional maternal care centers and commit $1 million in grants to community maternal health initiatives.
3. Rochester (N.Y.) Regional Health’s Newark-Wayne Community Hospital suspended its inpatient labor and delivery, newborn nursery and postpartum services Sept. 3 after it receives approval from the New York State Department of Health to close its Marshall Birthing Unit.
4. HCA Florida Capital Hospital in Tallahassee plans to discontinue its level 2 neonatal intensive care unit services, effective Nov. 1.
5. Henderson (Nev.) Hospital has shared plans to end maternity and neonatal intensive care unit services Sept. 30 following an internal assessment.
6. Grand Forks, N.D.-based Altru Health System will discontinue its home health services Sept. 1, citing regulatory pressures.
7. Rochester (N.Y.) Regional Health’s Newark-Wayne Community Hospital will suspend its inpatient labor and delivery, newborn nursery and postpartum services Sept. 3 after it receives approval from the New York State Department of Health to close its Marshall Birthing Unit.
8. UC Health will close Bridgeway Pointe, its assisted living facility on the Daniel Drake Campus in Cincinnati, and eliminate 49 positions, according to a July 30 filing with Ohio workforce officials.
9. Vandalia Health is closing the SurgiCare outpatient surgical facility at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston, W.Va., citing a need to reduce duplication and maximize efficiency.
10. Henry Ford Health will end inpatient care, emergency department services and other hospital-based operations at Henry Ford River District Hospital in East China, Mich.
