Data breach at New York ASC possibly exposes 135k patient records — 4 insights
An unauthorized third party possibly gained access to approximately 135,000 patient records at Albany, N.Y.-based St. Peter's Surgery & Endoscopy Center Jan. 8. The center said there was no evidence showing patient information was accessed or used in any way, but the center is "unable to definitively rule that out."

Missoula Bone & Joint approved for larger ASC
Missoula City Council approved Missoula (Mont.) Bone & Joint to open a 31,949-square-foot ASC on its campus, which already includes a 43,307-square-foot office building. The new surgery center could cost around 50 percent to 60 percent less than hospital-based procedures.

St. Rita's Medical Center to offer robotic surgery in outpatient ASC
Mercy Health St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima, Ohio, will feature a da Vinci Si surgical system in the Mercy Health-Ambulatory Surgery Center's new surgical room, expected to be fully operational by June. The surgical robot will allow physicians to perform single-quadrant gallbladder, prostate, hysterectomy and hernia surgeries.

UnitedHealth Group eyes acquisition of Envision's ambulatory unit
UnitedHealth Group submitted a bid to acquire Envision's ambulatory business, several people familiar with the matter said. Envision shares rocketed 5.9 percent after the rumors came out. It would be UnitedHealth Group's second ambulatory-facing acquisition; UnitedHealth's Optum acquired Surgical Care Affiliates for $2.3 billion in 2017.

Pennsylvania legislators expand ASC scope of care — 3 insights
Pennsylvania legislators expanded the duration that services can be performed in the ASC space to up to 24 hours. The state originally limited duration of services to a four-hour procedure and four hours of supervised recovery. The new law is now in effect.

UC San Diego to open Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion
UC San Diego is set to open the 156,000-square-foot, $140 million Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion March 12. The pavilion houses eight surgical suites, imaging services, physical therapy services and pain management services.

New Jersey ASC Association: Relative number of adverse events in surgery centers 'extraordinarily low'
New Jersey Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers President Jeff Shanton said a report by The Record and misrepresents ASCs and the quality of care they provide by using anecdotal information and allegations from ongoing lawsuits. Mr. Shanton's letter published on said the article failed to contextualize adverse events at ASCs by not evaluating hospitals or other healthcare facilities.
