The Eye Surgery Center in South Burlington is Vermont’s only ASC, but a group of nine investors has proposed the state’s second surgery center, according to a Seven Days report.

The Green Mountain Surgery Center is proposed for Colchester, Vt. The investors, most of whom are physicians, requested a certificate of need for the center in June. The facility would house two operating rooms, four procedure rooms and 14 recovery beds.

The project has support from several organizations including AARP Vermont, Vermont Campaign for Health Care Security, Vermont Education Health Initiative, Vermont Troopers’ Association and Seventh Generation, according to the report.

On the other hand, hospitals in the state are vocally opposing the center. The Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems and Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans have been named interested parties in the case, according to the report.

Hospital officials oppose the center, claiming unnecessary duplication of services and harm to hospital business.
