Here are five things to know about Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente from the last month:
1. It’s been nearly nine months since Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health joined Risant Health, a nonprofit created by Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente. Cone Health CFO Andy Barrow joined Becker’s to discuss how the deal has helped the system accelerate its value-based care mission.
2. Kaiser Permanente named Jeff Krawcek, MD, as executive vice president and CEO of the KP Medical Foundation, effective Sept. 10. Dr. Krawcek has 25 years of experience as a pediatrician. He currently serves as president and executive medical director of the Colorado Permanente Medical Group, which includes more than 1,200 physicians.
3. Hundreds of employees of Kaiser Permanente rallied for a new contract with the health system, including job protections against AI. The workers marched and waved signs outside Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center in Honolulu as a union contract was being negotiated for more than 60,000 of the health system’s staffers around the country.
4. Providence hospitals across California are the latest to sue Kaiser Permanente over allegations that the organization’s health plan has underpaid for emergency and post-stabilization care provided to Kaiser members.
5. Kaiser Permanente recorded an operating income of $1 billion (3.2% operating margin) in the second quarter of 2025, up from $908 million (3.1% margin) during the same period last year, according to its Aug. 8 financial report.
