Physician groups keep getting snapped up: 10 major deals to know

Physician group deal volume remained at high levels in 2023, according to VMG Health's 2024 Healthcare M&A Report published May 7. 

Here are 10 physician group deals to know in 2023, according to the report. 

1. In January 2023, private equity-backed Health Network One acquired Boca Raton, Fla.-based Premier Eye Care, an ophthalmology network of more than 20,000 eyecare providers. 

2. In March 2023, ASG Eye Hospitals acquired India-based eye care chain Vasan Eye Care for $64 million, bringing ASG's network to more than 150 facilities. 

3. In March 2023, private equity firm Clairvest Group acquired Bluetree Dental and its 29 providers and more than 45 offices for $9 million. 

4. Also in March 2023, private equity firm Kohlberg & Company acquired GI platform United Digestive and its 80 locations for $500 million from Frazier Healthcare Partners. 

5. In April 2023, global asset firm TPG and pharmaceutical distributor AmerisourceBergen acquired OneOncology and its 700 oncologists for $2.1 billion.

6. In April 2023, Optum acquired multispecialty physician group Crystal Run Healthcare and its more than 400 providers. 

7. In May 2023, CVS Health completed its $10.6 billion acquisition of primary care company Oak Street Health. 

8. In August 2023, medical device company INVO Bioscience closed its $10.5 million acquisition of the Madison-based Wisconsin Fertility Institute.

9. In October 2023, private equity group Ascend Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in Seoul Medical Group, which has nearly 400 primary care physicians and more than 4,400 specialists in the U.S. 

10. In November, American Shared Hospital Services acquired a 60% majority equity interest in two cancer centers, Southern New England Regional Cancer Center and Roger Williams Radiation Therapy.
