Novant Health, which operates Brunswick Novant Medical Center in Bolivia, N.C., was looking to expand its footprint in New Hanover County. The 40,000-square-foot medical plaza, which would include a surgery center, was initially slated to open in 2009. Construction was put on hold in 2010 due to the recession.
State regulators gave local healthcare providers permission in July for New Hanover Regional to acquire Novant’s interests in the surgery center. The two hospital systems are currently in negotiations.
New Hanover Regional has been assertive in its attempt to remain the region’s primary hospital system over the last few years, acquiring medical groups, constructing new buildings on its campus and recruiting new specialists.
