Highmark is in the process of acquiring West Penn Allegheny in a $475 million deal. Highmark has reported it will build 10 medical malls throughout the region. The types will include physician offices, ambulatory surgery centers, imaging and diagnostic centers and cancer treatment, according to the report.
Highmark is attempting to build a $1 billion integrated health system to compete with UPMC, the dominant hospital and physician network in Western Pennsylvania.
