Laparoscopic technology has allowed the procedure to move to the outpatient setting. The surgery allows women to have a one to two week recovery time versus a six-week recovery with a traditional hysterectomy. The surgery also leaves a smaller scar than the traditional procedure.
Jaimie Deraney, MD, an OB/GYN specialist, said the laparoscopic hysterectomy is reserved for patients with non-cancerous indications.
