Kenai Surgeons Take Issue With Hospital Development as Battle for Surgery Center CON Continues

A group of eight surgeons who want to build a $9 million, 8,365-square-foot ambulatory surgery center in Kenai, Alaska, has taken issue with the development of a fourth operating room at the local hospital, according to a Peninsula Clarion report.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly will address Kahtnu Venture’s litigation against Central Peninsula Hospital, which seeks an injunction against the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, with Central Peninsula Hospital and the borough listed as parties.

The group has sought an order from the court enjoining the construction of the fourth operating room at Central Peninsula Hospital and asking the court to prohibit the state from considering the fourth OR when determining whether to give the surgeons a certificate of need.

The borough has already authorized the construction contract for the hospital’s fourth operating room. In mid-January, the borough unanimously approved a resolution that opposed the issuance of a CON for the new surgery center.
