Kahtnu Ventures proposed building a $9 million, 8,365-square-foot ambulatory surgery center in the Alaska town. The group has said it hopes to eventually perform 1,800 outpatient surgeries a year with a group of eight local surgeons.
Officials from Central Peninsula Hospital are fighting the proposed surgery center on the grounds that it would detract from one of the hospital’s more profitable surgical service lines. CPH officials say the hospital could lose up to $20 million in charges among all services if the surgery center is built.
Other surgery center leaders said they experienced similar resistance when they proposed their facilities. Mark Wade, an orthopedic surgeon who helped start The surgery Center of Fairbanks, said he had lengthy discussions with Fairbanks Memorial Hospital when he submitted his proposal. He approached the hospital twice about building the surgery center and offered to be partners but was turned down.
