Judge Denies Illinois Hospital’s Attempt to Revoke Physician Privileges Over Plans for Competing Surgery Center

A Cook County Circuit Court judge has denied an attempt by Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington, Heights, Ill., to revoke the admitting privileges of a surgeon who planned to open a competing outpatient surgery center near the hospital’s campus, according to a Modern Healthcare report.

The judge issued a preliminary injunction that prevented the hospital from cutting ties with Yelena Levitin, MD. Dr. Levitin sued the hospital in November, alleging that the administration sided with surgeons who attempted to force her out in order to bolster their own practices.

Dr. Levitin alleged that the hospital also retaliated because of her plans to open an ASC four miles from its campus. Northwest Community Hospital publicly opposed the plan, she said.

The hospital disagreed with Dr. Levitin’s allegations but did not comment further. Dr. Levitin has been a member of the hospital’s medical staff since 2009.
