Hospital Mergers Down 13% in 2009

Mergers and acquisitions among hospitals were down 13 percent in 2009, and dollar volume of the transactions was down 35 percent, according to a news release from Irving Levin Associates.

According to the release, there were 52 hospital mergers and acquisitions in 2009, down from 60 in 2008. Dollar volume was 1.68 billion in 2009, down from 2.58 billion in 2008.

Across the healthcare industry, mergers were down 7 percent, with 932 mergers and acquisitions in 2009 compared with 1,001 in 2008. Dollar volume was up by 3 percent, however, with transactions totaling $232.9 billion in 2009, up from $226.8 billion in 2008, according to the report.

Biotechnology, e-health, medical devices and pharmaceuticals accounted for 62 percent of the total merger and acquisition volume in 2009, according to the report.
