Highmark Plans New Pennsylvania Surgery Center as Part of Expansion Plan

Highmark has received approval to renovate a former men’s clothing store in Monroeville, Pa., to accommodate a new ambulatory surgery center, according to a Pittsburgh Business Times report.

The facility will be the most recent in the insurer’s growing healthcare network. The city of Monroeville approved Tuesday the renovation of 27,091 square feet for the surgery center. The center is expected to open in 2014.

Highmark has been planning the expansion of its healthcare network since January 2012, when the insurer announced plans for nine medical malls and outpatient treatment centers surrounding Pittsburgh. President and CEO William Winkenwerder, MD, said last month that revisions in the plans mean fewer centers will be built.
