The Chesterfield City Council approved a zoning amendment last night allowing up to 72-hour stays at Dr. Paletta’s new facility. Area hospitals opposed the decision, saying the facility would be a hospital by definition if it included overnight stay.
“It’s a bigger issue than just for Chesterfield,” said Greg Bratcher, director of policy analysis for BJC HealthCare. Hospital officials say it creates an unfair playing field, since hospitals have to treat every patient who presents in the emergency room regardless of insurance. They say a surgery center with overnight stay capability would have to meet those same guidelines.
Regeneration Orthopedics, an orthopedic practice that includes Dr. Paletta, will operate at the proposed facility.
