Alaska Officials Discuss Divide Between Kenai Hospital, Independent Physicians in Battle for ASC

During a Tuesday meeting at the Kenai (Alaska) Peninsula Borough Assembly chambers, Assembly President Gary Knopp addressed a perceived "divide" between Central Peninsula Hospital and independent physicians pursuing the construction of an ASC, according to a Peninsula Clarion report.

Mr. Knopp said his concern about the divide started when Kahtnu Ventures first proposed to build an ambulatory surgery center in Kenai. The surgery center is currently being considered for a certificate of need by the state.

CPGH, Inc., Board President Lore Weimer said the division has resulted from the hospital's employment of physicians. Approximately 50 percent of the physicians on CPH's medical staff are employed, a move Ms. Weimer says is "disrespecting" to independent physicians.

Henry Krull, MD, an orthopedic surgeon associated with Kahtnu Ventures, said the physicians proposing the surgery center were threatened with retaliation by the hospital when they continued to push for the ASC. "The hospital has expressed very overtly its desire for a monopolization of healthcare," he said.
