24 new ASCs in May 2018

Here are 24 new ASCs that opened or were announced over the past month.

1. Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health broke ground on an outpatient surgery center May 1. The center is expected to be completed in August 2019.

2. The Surgery Center at Shrewsbury (Mass.) opened May 24, becoming the first new center in Massachusetts since the state lifted a moratorium preventing new centers in 2017.

3. A judge ruled in favor of Annapolis, Md.-based Anne Arundel Medical Center's bid to develop a cardiac surgery center.

4. Boulder (Colo.) Community Health is building a 30,000-square-foot medical office building next to its Community Medical Center in Lafayette, Colo. The health system could break ground on the office space by the end of this year, contingent on approval from the city of Lafayette.

5. Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Triad Center for Surgery applied to build an ASC with two ORs and three procedure rooms at an unspecified site for $7.2 million.

6. Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health sought approval for a 15,500-square-foot ASC with two ORs, a gastroenterology endoscopy room and a procedure room in Kernsersville, N.C., for $12.7 million.

7. Tampa, Fla.-based Physician Partners of America is constructing two multispeciality healthcare facilities in Orlando, Fla., and Merritt Island, Fla., that will both prominently feature ASCs. Each campus will tout a 9,060-square-foot ASC as well as more than 4,600 square feet of medical offices.

8. The Eye Surgery Center of Knoxville (Tenn.) recently opened the Eye Surgery Center in Powell (Tenn.). The center was completed in January.

9. Regent Surgical Health partnered with 14 physicians to open a joint venture surgery center, Oregon Surgical Institute in Beaverton. The new facility is 14,000 square feet and designed as a center of excellence for orthopedics, total joint replacements and spine surgery. The center also hosts pain management cases.

10. Port Jefferson (N.Y.) Surgery Center held its grand opening ceremony May 12 after its initial opening in January.

11. Construction has begun on an $86 million expansion to the Omaha (Neb.) VA Medical Center, which will add a 157,000-square-foot ASC slated for completion in summer 2020.

12. San Marcos, Texas-based Carus Dental opened the Carus Surgical Center, also in San Marcos, April 27. The center offers endodontic, orthodontic and oral surgery services.

13. NueHealth partnered with Rothman Institute, Jefferson Health and 14 multispecialty physicians to acquire the Plymouth Meeting, Pa.-based Blue Bell Surgery Center. Rothman Institute and Jefferson Health are based in Philadelphia. NueHealth is based in Leawood, Kansas.

14. Willmar, Minn.-based Carris Health opened its $11 million outpatient surgery center in Willmar.

15. Liberty Medical Development, a company based in the U.S. Virgin Islands, secured funding for an ASC on St. Croix. The company obtained $5 million in funding, with more than $1.25 million already invested.

16. Indian River Medical Center is readying to open the Scully Endoscopy Center. Both facilities are located in Vero Beach, Fla. The center will open in 2018.

17. Dallas-based Children's Health opened Specialty Center 2, which includes the Live Oak Surgery Center, also in Plano.

18. The Surgery Center for FGM, the nation's first nonprofit surgery center, opened in Atlanta to treat victims of female genital mutilation both surgically and psychologically.

19. Four Bloomington-Normal, Ill., eye care providers are merging to form a new $10 facility. All optometrists and ophthalmologists at Eye Surgical Associates, McLean County Eye Center, Central Illinois Eye Care and Eyecare Associates will continue at the as-of-yet unnamed merged practice, which will employ about 90 people. The merging practices expect to move into the new facility by August 2019.

20. Bozeman (Mont.) Health and United Surgical Partners International partnered to build a $20 million ASC in West Bozeman. Construction on the new ASC is expected to begin in 2019.

21. Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System filed a plan to invest $50 million in a new medical center next to the Laurel (Md.) Regional Hospital. The new facility, UM Laurel Medical Center, will feature a surgery center, 24/7 emergency care, behavioral health resources and outpatient programs such as wellness promotion.

22. Murfreesboro, Tenn.-based Saint Thomas Health purchased 2.25 acres of land for $1.19 million to build its new outpatient surgery center.

23. Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Vance Thompson Vision is putting the finishing touches on its new facility in Omaha, Neb., set to open in mid-August 2018.

24. San Jose, Calif.-based Allied Pain & Spine Institute announced the opening of Trinity Surgery Center in San Jose.
