WHO Updates Healthcare Waste Management Handbook

The World Health Organization has released the second edition of its handbook on healthcare waste management, known as "the Blue Book."

The second edition of the handbook, "Safe Management of Wastes From Health-Care Activities," expands and updates information on the safe, sustainable and affordable management of healthcare waste. The first edition was published in 1999.

Some of the changes include an expanded chapter on sources and treatment of wastewater and the addition of two chapters: one on healthcare waste management in emergencies and one on emerging diseases, drug-resistant pathogens, climate change and technology advances that will need to be accounted for in future healthcare waste systems.
