6 Points on Environmental Compliance in Healthcare

Attorneys Richard Porter and Dana Mehlman of Hinshaw & Culbertson recently hosted a webinar on environmental compliance for healthcare entities. Here are six points to consider when aligning with environmental law within the healthcare industry.

1. Clean water issues. Facilities must have the proper permit for wastewater discharges and be aware of current regulations.

2. Medical waste tracking. Keep a program in place for the tracking and recycling of medical waste.

3. Clean air act. Provide documentation of sterilization processes.

4. Toxic substances control act. Adhere to lead hazard regulations, which can be violated during renovations involving paint.

5. Emergency planning and community right-to-know act. Always report accidental chemical emissions to local authorities.

6. Compliance incentives. Environmental compliance protects a facility's public image and protects the facility from violating EPA procedures.
