WHO: Risk of Dying From Hospital Infection Far Greater Than Airplane Crash

Liam Donaldson, the World Health Organization's new envoy for patient safety, reported individuals face a 1 in 10 chance of being exposed to a medical error and 1 in 300 chance of dying due to a medical error, according to a Reuters report.

In contrast, consumers face a 1 in 10 million chance of dying in an airplane crash, according to the news report. Dr. Donaldson, who was previously chief medical officer for England, said the statistics show "that healthcare generally worldwide still has a long way to go," according to the news report.
