Here are five points:
1. The survey found 65 percent of nurses reported having a patient contract a healthcare-associate infection while in their care.
2. Of those nurses, 85 percent reported being concerned they will too contract an HAI.
3. The survey supports CDC estimates that one in 25 acute care hospital patients in the United States acquire an HAI every year.
4. The survey found discrepancies in consumer safety perceptions and healthcare professional safety practices. Nine out of 10 consumers are concerned about HAI when having surgery, and healthcare professionals reported following infection control procedures only a little more than 50 percent of the time.
5. Patient Shield Concepts commissioned the survey.
