The American Board of Medical Specialties and the National Patient Safety Foundation jointly held a summit to discuss how to improve diagnostic accuracy.
Here are five observations:
1. The two organizations held the summit in response to the release of the recent Institute of Medicine report that outlined the serious threat of diagnostic error.
2. Researchers, policy analysts and healthcare leaders gathered for the summit.
3. Some of the presenters included, Susan Edgman-Levitan, PA, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston; Rosemary Gibson of The Hastings Center in Garrison, N.Y.; and Mark Graber, MD, of Society to Improve Medical Diagnosis and RTI International in Chicago.
4. The organizations will publish a proceedings paper in early 2016.
5. "We recognize that, while physicians' stills are essential, improvement of diagnostic accuracy require systems improvement as well," said John Moorhead, MD, acting chair, ABMS board of directors. "The Summit was the continuation of conversation within the board's community on impactful ways to maximize diagnostic accuracy and patient safety."
