Unreported, preventable medical errors may cost thousands of Iowans their lives — 4 notes

Thousands of patients in Iowa’s hospitals are seriously or fatally injured due to unreported, preventable medical errors, as found in Heartland Health Research Institute’s new report, “Silently Harmed—Hospital Medical Errors in Iowa,” according to cbc online.

Here are four notes:

1. The report estimates the social cost of patients’ harm ranges from $910 million to $24 billion dollars each year.

2. The report’s authors say if the CDC included preventable medical errors as a listed category, it would rank as the third leading cause of death in the nation.

3. Each year, between 64,500 and 112,000 Iowan patients may be seriously harmed, for an average of nearly 85,000 patients.

4. The report advises hospital leaders and board members to implement a zero-tolerance mentality and create a new culture of safety, in which the facilities put in internal systems and policies to prevent errors.
